The Ion is one of the cheapest vehicles to own on paper. Parts are inexpensive and widely available, labor is straightforward at an independent shop, and insurance is low due to the vehicle's modest value. The hidden cost is rust remediation — a Midwest Ion that hasn't been undercoated may need brake line replacement, exhaust work, or subframe attention that can easily outstrip the car's market value. Budget realistically for what you find under the car.

Same compact segment, similar price when new, significantly stronger reliability reputation and better resale. A same-year Civic with similar miles is a more proven long-term bet.

Direct competitor in the economy compact class. Corolla has a stronger rust resistance record and longer average lifespan, making it a safer used-car buy in the salt belt.

GM stablemate on a similar budget. Shares some platform DNA and parts availability, but has a similarly mixed reliability record. Worth cross-shopping if the Ion's price is the draw.
